The Patch Box Through the Ages

Many muzzleloading rifles have a compartment on the right side of the butt: the patch box. This compartment has been around for centuries and was first popularized on German hunting rifles and then evolved on the famous American longrifles aka Kentucky rifles in the 18th century and early 19th century. Smoothbore firearms for war or hunting fowl by contrast rarely featured these compartments. A rare German swivel breech combination rifle and smoothbore hunting gun from c. 1760. Note the sliding lid for the stock compartment. Patch Box History On early rifles like the Germanic wheellock sporting rifles and traditional jaeger rifles, the compartment lid was generally a sliding piece of wood. That carried over into the American long rifles of the 18th century, especially prior to the American Revolution. By the late 18th century, hinged brass patch boxes became more standard in the United States as well as Europe. On […]

Texas Outlaws and Lawmen Shop at Wolf & Klar

As Texas entered the 20th century, Fort Worth was easing away from its origins as a cowtown. Modernity was encroaching as tangles of power lines crossed over newly-paved streets where motor cars began to appear. By the 1920s, oil money was flowing into the city, seen as a gateway to the oilfields of west Texas. At 1505 Main Street, a thoroughfare that ran from the Tarrant County Courthouse south to the railyards, was Wolf & Klar, a proent hardware, jewelry, and gun store that attracted Texas outlaws, lawmen, among others. Gunmakers Colt and Smith & Wesson counted the company as one of their biggest customers. Wolf & Klar was known for its aftermarket nickel plated, engraved guns with carved pearl grips. A Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector Third Model revolver, known as a Wolf & Klar model, and a factory engraved Colt Single Action Army revolver, both shipped to […]

Time for Congress to Crack Down on the ATF’s Pistol Brace Rule

ATF’s Rule Forces Gun Owners to Give Their Fingerprints In the past, GOA members like you have successfully pressured the ATF to walk back and even withdraw some of its gun control mandates. But to get the ATF to overturn Biden’s pistol ban, we’ll need an even stronger pressure campaign… That’s why GOA is now urging members of Congress to pressure the ATF to pull its new pistol brace rule, which restricts your God-given right to own a pistol. Please add your name to our pre-written letter to urge your Representative and two Senators to pressure the ATF to pull its pistol brace rule. The ATF’s pistol brace rule forces millions of gun owners to choose between complying with an invasive and burdensome registration process that includes giving the ATF your FINGERPRINTS… or face jail-time and pay a $250,000 fine. And now that the ATF has created a federal gun […]

GOA Joins the Fight Against New Oregon Gun Control

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 1, 2022 Washington, D.C. Last night, Gun Owners of America (GOA) and Gun Owners Foundation (GOF) filed an amicus brief on behalf of the Oregon Firearms Federation in their lawsuit challenging the narrowly passed (and Bloomberg funded) statewide anti-gun measure. This new law, which is scheduled to take effect December 8th, would: Ban magazines over 10 rounds Require a permit to purchase any firearm Require a training course, application fee, fingerprinting, and a duplicative background check to obtain the permit-to-purchase Erich Pratt, GOA’s Senior Vice President, issued the following statement: “All of these newly enacted policies fly in direct contradiction to the Second Amendment and the recent Bruen decision. We look forward to joining the fight to defeat the measure in Court.” Sam Paredes, on behalf of the Board of Directors for the Gun Owners Foundation, added: “GOF has been fighting in the trenches at the state […]

AR: Make Plans to Attend “Meet Your Legislator” Day Now

Dear friend, Our friends at Gun Owners of Arkansas are hosting a “Meet Your Legislator” Day at the Arkansas State Capitol on Monday, January 9th, 2023. Please make plans to attend now! Around the country, anti-gunners in their “pink shirts” often show up at their state capitol pushing their radical, anti-gun legislation. Sadly, some gun owners can’t be bothered to show up to counter their efforts. However, you have an incredible opportunity to speak up for the Second Amendment to your state representatives this January. By engaging with your lawmakers, you will have a huge impact on not only killing anti-gun legislation, but also passing much needed pro-gun reforms. Be sure to invite a friend (or a dozen!). GOA’s Senior Vice President, Erich Pratt will also be at the event. When: Monday, January 9th, 2023 at 11:30 AM Where: 500 Woodlane St, Little Rock, AR 72201 Why: To speak up […]

Help Remove Gun Control From NDAA!

); The Anti-Gunners Are Trying to Weasel-in More Gun Control Through the NDAA…Again As usual, anti-gun lawmakers are trying to sneak-in gun control into a must-pass bill and once again, they’re hijacking the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, to do it. This is a big deal because it directs how we fund our military. Last year, they tried to put in a national “red flag” gun confiscation provision. This time they’ve added an amendment to set-up a program for so called “safe-storage.” If this passes, you can count on them using this to justify extreme gun control. Contact your senators and representatives and demand they vote to […]

Buffalo Bill’s Presentation Winchester 1895

Buffalo Bill Cody needs no introduction to those even vaguely familiar with the American West. The Union scout, Pony Express rider, Civil War soldier, Medal of Honor recipient, Indian fighter, and buffalo hunter was aly a living legend by the time he founded his Wild West show in 1883, and factory-documented Buffalo Bill presentation firearms are some of the scarcest treasures in gun collecting. The Winchester Model 1895 lever action carbine offered in Rock Island Auction Company’s December 9-11 Premier Firearms Auction is factory documented as presented by Buffalo Bill Cody to Fred Kavanaugh, Cody’s friend and business partner. A Winchester 1895 carbine presented by Buffalo Bill, one of the defining figures of the American West. The historical significance of this exceptional Winchester 1895 carbine cannot be overstated. Most firearms presented by Buffalo Bill have found their way into museums and are not available on the private market. Add to […]

FPC Files Lawsuit Challenging Oregon “Large Capacity” Magazine Ban as Unconstitutional

VA: Take Action to Trash Virginia’s Universal Background Checks

); Encourage AG Jason Miyares to Stop UBCs Dear friend, One of the most egregious laws recently passed in the Old Doion was Universal Background Checks. In short, this law requires practically every transfer of a firearm to require a background check and paperwork, opening the door to backdoor gun registration. GOA and the Virginia Citizens Defense League challenged the law, and actually achieved a historic victory, exempting young adults from the law. Clearly, this law is an infringement, and in a post-Bruen legal world, it will most likely not pass legal muster. However, gun owners need support from Attorney General Jason Miyares to help dismantle this law. […]

Suppressed AK: You Know You Want One

Suppressed AK: You Know You Want One Home November 29, 2022 So, you want to suppress your AK? Sounds like a plan. But before you start, make sure you DO have a plan. Like everything else in Kalashnikov Land, there ain’t no one size fits all approach. Papa Kalash’s rifles are notoriously individualistic. Be aware of that fact before you start and adapt your plan to fit your rifle. A suppressed AK would be awesome. Just make sure you have a plan. (imfdb.org) The Russians shipped AKs all over the world and many different countries produce their own versions. Kalashnikov purposely designed the rifle with loose tolerances to aid reliability. Those tolerances also allow some wiggle room for less sophisticated manufacturing processes, meaning that some AK parts often require “adjustment” to fit in different models. Just try putting a stock gas tube in different rifles. Chances are it won’t fit […]

Biden’s last-ditch effort to ban “assault weapons”

We have an emergency on our hands. Joe Biden is trying to pass an “assault weapons” ban before the new Congress takes hold in January. Because an “assault weapons” ban aly passed the House earlier this year, the 50-50 Senate is our only hope of stopping Biden’s latest attack on the Second Amendment. And since the midterm elections are now over and many Senators are about to retire, many Senators no longer feel accountable to their constituents. That’s why GOA needs our grassroots army of members like YOU to whip the Senate into line and stop them from surrendering our God-given rights during the lame duck session. Please add your name to our pre-written letter to tell the 50-50 Senate to VOTE NO on any “assault weapons” ban that Biden tries to ram through Congress during the lame duck session. ADD YOUR NAME >> The ban passed by the House […]

Seward’s Folly? Not This Colt Pocket Navy Revolver!

William Seward, a strident abolitionist and one-time political rival of President Abraham Lincoln served as his Secretary of State and was also a target of the assassination plot that took the 16th president’s life. His negotiation of the purchase of Alaska under President Andrew Johnson earned the territory the nicknames “Seward’s Icebox,” and “Seward’s Folly,” but he considered it his greatest achievement. Considering Seward needed to soothe European leaders into neutrality and looking for gift possibilities, it is fitting that Colt presented him with a Pocket Navy percussion revolver. The pistol, that features a hammer with an engraved wolf’s head motif and late percussion vine scroll as well as an inscription to Seward from Colt, is on offer in Rock Island Auction Company’s Dec. 9-11 Premier Auction. A cased and engraved Colt Pocket Navy was presented to Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State, Edward Seward, as the Civil War started. William […]

The 7x57mm… or 275 Rigby Part II

11/27/2022 I don’t particularly care for putting in range time in the winter. No matter what gear I put on, sitting still at a bench results in numb feet, frosty fingers and a face wind burned into leather. Hunting in the cold is a different thing because, with the… Sign In Join Now Real Guns
