Gun control activists took over the South Dakota Second Preservation Act and turned it into a bill that would further restrict your rights. South Dakota deserves better – but we need your help.
The South Dakota Second Amendment Preservation Act (SAPA), HB 1052, was defeated on the State House floor Tuesday 39 to 28. An early version of HB 1052 was a reasonable starting point to safeguard the liberties of South Dakota citizens from federal overreach. Regrettably, amendments were added to the bill that sought to add Federal gun control into South Dakota state law. GOA appreciates the hard work of Rep Aylward to bring this critical idea forward for discussion.
Special interest groups convinced the committee to add the regulations to the bill so South Dakota wouldn’t lose certain Federal funding. But these regulations – which we also oppose on a Federal level – would restrict people from possessing firearms without due process. So, for this session, HB 1052 is dead. But there is still another option for protecting your Second Amendment rights.
Within the South Dakota Senate, SB 209, is advancing. Sadly, SB 209 is only a resolution. It doesn’t have any penalties to hold State level government officials accountable to We the People if they disobey their sacred oaths and enforce unconstitutional edicts from the Federal government.
But the bill can be amended with prudent provisions that contain teeth – if we take action right now.
The legislative clock is ticking. GOA urges you to hold your elected officials accountable and demand that they pass SAPA legislation that actually protects the liberties of South Dakota citizens.
If we wish to have a rebirth of liberty within this nation, we must passionately strive to preserve liberty and that effort begins with the Sovereign States adhering to their mandate to defend the liberties of their citizens from unconstitutional Federal overreach.
